Written by:Dr. Antonio Bowen Antolin is a dentist and belongs to The Doctors, the select circle of top-level doctors in Spain. As an expert in dental laser we will explain the details of this technique.
What is the laser technique?
The laser technique consists in the application of a light, laser light on some tissues in such a way that exerts its action exclusively on them. The case in hand, which is the application of the laser in the mouth consists of the application of different types of laser on the different tissues that we have in the mouth, both teeth and gums, such as bone or any other tissue and on them selectively exert their action .
What advantages does it offer over other techniques?
The advantages are undoubted. In the first place, it is a totally selective technique, which means that we are only going to treat those tissues that have pathology. Second, it offers sterilization, a totally clean, totally sterile practice, since the laser at the same time that is cutting or eliminating tissues that are diseased, also eliminates all the bacteria that are present in the area.. And in third place and much more important, it offers the technique of absence of pain. With laser techniques, laser technology the amount of anesthesia to be used is minimal and in the case of fillings or fillings practically non-existent. Finally, the laser is, classically, a minimally invasive technique that offers all the advantages of the usual techniques and no inconvenience of the most common ones.
Can it be used in any pathology of the mouth?
Yes, laser technology can be used in all pathologies of the mouth, in all diseases of the mouth, and also in all subspecialties of odonto-stomatology. So we apply conservative dentistry to make fillings or fillings, for periodontal or gum treatments, in which the effectiveness is maximum, for the entire field of surgery of the mouth in which it is undoubted use and also allows bloodless surgery and totally accurate, in implantology for both the treatment of diseased implants and for the treatment of implant insertion, and in prostheses it is also used in the same way as for dental whitening and of course, for the treatment of dentin sensitivity.
What should patients take into account after the intervention?
Basically follow the rules, rules and advice given by your dentist. But we must bear in mind that they are much less invasive interventions, much faster interventions, interventions usually without anesthesia in most of the time so the rules to be followed by the patient is conventional, simple, is the reimbursement to their usual daily life as fast as possible. There is no special care, except the general ones of any intervention.
