Arteriovenous fistula

Specialty of Vascular Surgery

Arteriovenous fistulas are abnormal connections between arteries and veins, causing a lack of oxygen to the lungs. Normally, blood flows through the arteries and then returns to the heart through the veins, but when there is an arteriovenous fistula, some blood flow passes directly from the artery to the vein. Thus, tissues do not receive enough oxygen without reaching capillary circulation, whereby the affected tissue oxygenation may be poor.

A major cause of this disease is the abnormal development of blood vessels in the lung. Those who suffer from hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (genetic disorder involving malformation of blood vessels) are more likely to be exposed.
