Transcutaneous stimulation (TENS)
Transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) is a noninvasive technique that involves applying a low frequency electric current on nerve fibers in the skin to ease the pain. This treatment uses a mild current in order to prevent nerve cells from bone pain transmitted to the brain. The aim is to stimulate other nerve endings in the skin release a substance that relieves pain nerves generate a natural analgesic substances (beta-endorphins) and prevent bone cells that perceive pain are activated. The stimulation has to be regulated in intensity and frequency in each case and patient, and the pulse period and rest.
