The skeletal dysplasias are a group of diseases related to the low height of the individual due to a disturbance in the formation of bones and cartilage, especially in the extremities and spine. They are among the most frequent causes of stunting, and account for about 5% of genetic diseases of the newborn. There are hundreds of skeletal dysplasias, most of them genetic. The most common form of bone dysplasia is achondroplasia, in which there is a short stature by limb shortening.
