Blepharospasm

Blepharospasm is an involuntary and repetitive contraction of the orbicularis (circular located around the eye), which causes abnormal movements of the eyelids. This results in various visual disturbances (uncontrollable blinking, forced closing of the eyes, decreased vision), and abnormal movements of neck, head or mouth only disappear during sleep (facial dystonia). It is one of the most common eye diseases caused by side effects of some medications, neurological disorders in the central nervous system or a lack of lubrication of the ocular surface (which causes increased activity of the eyelid to distribute poor tear). Treatment includes eye protection sunglasses, application of lubricating drops and supply of botulinum toxin to prevent the orbicular muscles contract.
