intraoperative radiotherapy
Intraoperative radiotherapy (RIO) is one in which the irradiation is administered in the same surgery. It involves applying a very high dose of radiation to the area of interest affected. As a result the adjacent tissues and organs receive minimal exposure, since they can be moved to protect them during irradiation. With the "excluded" from the treatment area and maximum tumor healthy tissue exposed to the radiation intraoperatia can provide, in certain cases, improve important in terms of disease control with minimal toxicity.
