Currently, arthrocentesis is the treatment indicated for joint ailments of the jaw and with which better results are obtained. Some ailments that affect up to 30% of the general population and produce a decrease in mouth opening of up to no more than 20 millimeters.

Arthrocentesis is an intervention that involves injecting a specific fluid, specifically Ringer Lactate serum, to distend the joint. At that time the joint disc is released and through some movements and manipulations of the patient's jaw we get to return it to its original position. In this way, joint blockage disappears reducing pain , while the function of the joint recovers, reaching almost back to normal.

A bad dental occlusion

The general causes of joint dysfunctions usually lie in a poor dental occlusion , understanding occlusion as the alignment of the teeth and the assembly of the upper parts with the lower ones, which is called a bite.. If it appears disorganized, it can cause a malfunction of the joint.

Only a very small percentage of people have a perfect or stable dental occlusion, we must also bear in mind that in adulthood there is a loss of teeth and, therefore, a decompensation of the system that affects the joint. In turn, a premature degeneration of the joint will cause osteoarthritis and jaw problems. Thanks to the arthrocentesis, this premature degeneration of the articulation and the derived problems that appear in the longer term are avoided. And, of course, the quality of life of the affected patient is improved.

Many people with this problem who come to the doctor only when they feel a significant pain but when they come to our office many have an oral opening less than 20 mm. Through arthrocentesis it has been possible for patients with such a problem to return home the day after the intervention with an opening of 45 millimeters, equivalent to three fingers.

Mandibular arthroscopy

A single intervention of arthrocentesis gives good results, which can be complemented by a more visual procedure, such as arthroscopy of the temporomandibular joint. Through arthroscopy, the joint is distended. This technique consists of introducing a tube with a camera that allows working inside the joint, recovering accurately the problems of the articular disc, suturing it and returning it to its original position.

It is also possible to perform a wash and a good remodeling of the joint.

After the entire procedure, treatment should continue with physiotherapy sessions and, in the consultation, follow up on the discharge splint that the patient should take before and after the arthrocentesis.
