Endoscopic nasal surgery
Written by:What are the advantages of nasal endoscopic surgery compared to other treatments?
The advantages of nasosinusal endoscopic surgery over older techniques basically consist in that it is a much less invasive technique, which therefore produces less bleeding during the operation, a shorter duration of the surgical act itself and the absence of external incisions.
It should also be noted that for the surgeon there is a better visualization of the anatomical structures and that in the immediate post-operative there is practically no tamponade in the nose with which the patient leaves the operating room breathing through the nose. It must also be said that the post-operative recovery has a much shorter time and therefore the patient can be reintegrated very soon to their normal activities.
What pathologies can be corrected thanks to this surgery?
Functional nasosinusal endoscopic surgery was developed to treat chronic rhinosinusitis with or without polyps inside the nose. This was a breakthrough compared to the conventional techniques we had so far. Subsequently, small variations of the basic technique have been incorporated that allow treating, for example, the hypertrophy of the turbinates, the growth thereof, by radiofrequency.
You can also treat benign tumors, both nasal and sinus pits, and can perform small surgeries on the nasal septum that do not involve the need for a complete septoplasty.
What aspects should be considered before and after this surgery?
The only thing that must be taken into account before performing nasosinusal endoscopic surgery is that the patient must have undergone a preoperative CT scan.
This allows the surgeon to know in advance the anatomy and pathology that is to be found, which greatly increases safety and reduces the possibility of post-operative complications.
Regarding post-operative care, these are minimal. It is simply a medical treatment and a start of nasal washes that allow to eliminate the secretions that may have accumulated in the nostrils. That makes the patient, very quickly, rejoin his usual life.
