Cirugía de Mohs contra el cáncer de piel
Written by:This technique is possible thanks to the microscopic supervision that makes it possible to analyze 100% of the tumor edges of each of the layers, and thus be able to guide the surgeon in the successive tumor persistence until the tumor is completely extirpated.
The technique consists of performing a systematic and orderly sequence in which a ring of skin is removed around the tumor that is analyzed under a microscope, being able to observe the entire base of that tissue. This process as a whole is called ¨pase¨ or ¨stadium¨. At the end of each pass we will be able to know if the tumor has been completely excised or if, on the contrary, there is tumor persistence in some area. In that case it will be necessary to obtain a new ring from the tumor area, and so on until the tumor is removed.
In addition, this method has the extraordinary additional advantage of not specifying blind safety margins, which allows the saving of healthy tissue and better postoperative reconstruction possibilities (a determining factor since most skin cancers occur on the face).
Long-term statistics indicate that the technique of Mohs surgery is the one with the highest cure rates , even though patients treated under this modality tend to be the ones with the worst prognosis .
